How much hay do I need for my goats?

This calculator is intended to help you estimate the hay supply you will need to support goats (or other animals) for a determined amount of time. It does NOT include any considerations for sufficient nutritional value in that hay for those animals. I'll be adding another calculator for that in the future.

This calculator uses 4% of body weight per day, which is a full point higher than their actual requirement of 3% dry matter. This is to account for waste, spoilage, moisture content, and to provide slack capacity for the unexpected.

This calculator also assumes that 100% of the animal's dry-matter requirments are being provided via this hay. Meaning the animal's actual requirements will be lower if they are being provided with supplemental feed such as grain or an alternative roughage source such as corn stalks or stockpiled forage.
